...that no one in any other field would understand your having there?
For quite a while I was the only youth minister in Upper Michigan with a 40-pound bag of quick setting cement in his office. We used it to make stepping stones for a youth group day on ebenezers, or monuments in a place where God did something really cool.
In St. Louis, I have this: it's a microwave potato cooker, but I use it to play "What is it?" a game where each youth group member has to take a random object and instantly make up a use for it, without naming its actual function.
What do you keep in the office that flummoxes people when they see it for the first time?

Great question...I have a Mr. Potato HEad in my office (I'm a seminary professor of youth ministry). I use it to talk about philosophy of ministry vs. programs in ministry. I also have a ball of clay that sits on my desk that I have used in class.

Ooh, potato heads are a good one-- what's the argument you use about philosophy vs. programs when you teach with the little guy? I'd love to see the outline!
I also discovered today a croquet set and a 12-foot section of rain gutter, both of which have completely legitimate youth ministry purposes (the croquet set for cross-gen ministry, getting older members to teach our students the game, or for the rector's kids to invent Extreme Croquet with; and the rain gutter for building record-breaking banana splits!)
Oh Man - I just moved into my office today - and we put a new desk unit in there... we got it from a member's business that was getting rid of old office furnature. pretty cool post man! I'm in there with the rookie thing - so you're not alone!

Great Question. Since I am a Jr. High Youth Pastor, I have two entire shelves above the couch in my office filled with "toys" for the Jr. Highers. Some of the most interesting are: "eye-ball balls", "my personal tornado", and a miniature pool table and miniature foosball game set. I have so many other funny, crazy, silly things that the Jr. Highers love (and I must admit I love them too). Lots of fun... one of the joys of our career. :)
I have a set of those little wooden logic puzzles. I can never figure them out, but it usually takes my students just a few minutes to put them together-- makes me very proud and very humble at the same time-- these kids are so smart! Right now they're all assembled and on display so I noticed them...
A couple of years ago the camp I worked for gave out the "Jesus Action Figure" to the staffers, so those are now floating around a few offices out there!
